Located in Praça da República, in Coimbra’s heart the heart of the city, the Despertar Saudade Local Lodge is in a building dating to the 1940’s, specifically rebuilt for the purpose of hosting tourists providing our best amenities.

Its reception displays contemporary accommodations.
The hotel consists of three double rooms with separate kitchenette, a simple double room, a triple room, and four single rooms. Every room has thematic decor related to the history of the city, all with air conditioning, cable TV, free Wi-Fi access, and private bathroom with shower, reading area with desk, a fridge and microwave oven. Some rooms have a balcony with view to the Praça.

Despertar Saudade presents varied features that allow event/ venue creation on its terraces, providing a professional team that will be delighted to help and support guests in whatever is necessary.

Jardim da Sereia («Mermaid» Garden) is 150 meters (490 feet) away from the Lodge, and the Alta, where you can find the University of Coimbra, classified as World Heritage by UNESCO, is about 10 minutes walking. Our central location allows quick access to all major city historical locations, on foot, or by public transportation.
In the immediate vicinity, guests will find countless restaurants and bars, night bars and clubs, university canteens, post offices, banks, and several tourist attractions including, amongst others, the Gil Vicente Academic Theatre (TAGV) and the famous Biblioteca Joanina (Joanina Library) of the University of Coimbra.

Nº 1 — Fonte dos Amores Single

The fountain of Love…Amor… is situated on the left bank of the Mondego river, in Quinta das Lágrimas, «lágrimas» means tear drops… Famous for having been the scenario of the forbiden love affair of D.Pedro, future King of Portugal and D.Inês, a Spanish maiden . This theme inspired many works of art, musical pieces and literature. Since the XIV century it’s gardens , fresh corners and trees evoke romance and saudade.

Nº 2 — Penedo da Saudade – Duplo – Double – Kitchenette

Penedo da Saudade is a sightseeing spot to visit in Coimbra, a garden built in 1849 from where you can see the eastern part of Coimbra and the serras of Lousã and Roxo. It is a place where academic life finds its eternal moments of Saudade through the poems engraved in the stones, placed there to comemorate academic events of former students and poems written by students. The oldest stone dates to 1855.

Nº 3 — Torre da Universidade single

This tower is the brand image of Coimbra. Built by an italian architect António Canevari replaced a former and older tower from 1561 by João de Ruão. It can be visited during summer providing a beautiful view over Coimbra and the Mondego. This tower with its clock and bell still dictates the schedules and calls university students to classes.

Nº 4 — Quinta das lágrimas – Duplo – Double – Kitchenette

“Quinta das Lágrimas” is a mansion and farmhouse located on the left bank of the Mondego river it dates to the fourteenth century and it was an hunting ground for the Portuguese royal family. Queen Isabel, wife of King Dinis, acquired this land because of its two natural water sources to suply water to the Monastery of Santa Clara, that she founded in nearby terrains. Tradition and literature strongly associate the story of Dom Pedro and D. Inês to “Quinta das Lágrimas”.

In the garden of the estate there are two historical natural water sources, the Love Fountain and the Fountain of Tears. It is said that this was the scenário to the prince's forbidden love - Pedro (future King Pedro I of Portugal) and Inês de Castro, a Galician noblewoman who served as chaperone of his wife D. Constança.

Inês de Castro was murdered by noblemen by decree of King Afonso IV . The tears shed by Inês and in her memory inspired Luís de Camões (poet) to name this fountain: the Fountain of Tears, many other writers consacrated this place to the eternal love of Pedro and Inês.

Nº 5 — Jardim Botânico – Duplo – Double – Kitchenette

The Botanical Garden of the University of Coimbra reaches 13.5 ha it’s land belonged and was donated by the Benedictines. Located in the historical center of the city since 1772 it extends along a small valley on the right bank of the Mondego river. It was created by resolution of the Marquês of Pombal and initally was limited to a central square embankment "reduced only to the number of medicinal herbs essential to Botanical exercises."

Nº 6 — Aqueduto Arcos do Jardim — Single

This Aquaduct known in Coimbra by Arcos do Jardim is really the Aquaduct of São Sebastiao built by the italian architect Filipe Terzio on the XVI century where there was an ancient roman aquaduct.It is close to the Botanical GArden and the building you see behind is the Antropology Institute a must see if you appreciate the beauty of XVI tiles with their magnificent colours and themes.

At “Quinta das Lágrimas”, says the legend of historical basis, took place the "love of Inês that once were" (as Luís de Camões wrote n 'Os Lusíadas) the presence of rare red algae still there in the Fountain of tears, soon led people to tell that this was the place of death of "beautiful Inês," the "miserable and mean» in Camões the words , «after her death was made queen."
